Structured Literacy Intensive for Middle/High School Readers
This two–week intensive structured literacy camp is geared towards middle and high school readers who require a literacy boost during the summer months. Summer is an important time to work intentionally using the science-based knowledge of reading acquisition and associated instructional methods. Coupled with several years out from a global pandemic, many students are struggling to comprehend what they read because of weak underlying decoding skills. During this deep dive, we will learn a basic history of the English language that will serve as a backdrop for the structure of our language and how we can use that knowledge as a key to reading more fluently. Students will be assessed at the beginning and end of the session, learn how to read and spell multi-syllable words, strengthen their letter–sound correspondence through cursive letter formation, solidify advanced phonic patterns, and improve all three components of fluent reading (accuracy, rate, and prosody). A report of each student's pre–/post–assessment and recommended goals will be shared at the end of the two week session.

What approaches does Kim use for therapeutic reading instruction?
Kim uses evidence–based instructional methods and her goal is always to expand a child's independence when they come to a word they do not recognize, need to organize a writing response, or do not understand what they are reading.
She completed Comprehensive Plus and Morphology Plus Training through the Institute for Multi–Sensory Education and holds certification through the Center for Effective Reading Instruction. While she tailors her instruction to meet a child's individual needs, the Orton–Gillingham framework is the primary approach in her reading instruction.
In addition, she utilizes Read Naturally to support fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary growth. For writing, across both syntactic and semantic development, Kim uses Project Read's Framing Your Thoughts and Self–Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) tools.
